The first recipients of the Travel Fellowship Dr Barend Fourie and DR Himal Dama report on their awazing week.

Thanks to a generous sponsorship from the Paediatric Cardiac Society of South Africa and SCAI we were able to attend a Fellows Interventional Cardiology Workshop in Las Vegas in December 2013.

It was a very intensive overview of all the aspects of interventional cardiology by a very experienced faculty lead by Dr. ZiyadHijazi and Dr. John Cheatam.

The one thing that stood out for me from the workshop is to be able to run a successful interventional cardiology program you need to have the correct equipment. You also have to have a dedicated and enthusiastic team that includes the Cardiologist, Cardiothoracic surgeon, Radiographers, Technologists and nursing staff. Another aspect is that you cannot become a successful interventional cardiologist overnight; you need to spend a lot of time in the Cath Lab and learn from your mentors.

It is important to keep improving our skills by attnding workshops like theseand to keep on inviting some of the international faculty to assist us with difficult cases and learn from their experience.

I surely hope that more fellows will be able to attend this workshop in the future.

Barend Fourie
