The speciality of paediatrics is growing up with a growth in the number of registered paediatricians in the country increasing as well and the number of paediatric surgeons. There are currently 1246 registered paediatricians of whom 318 have sub-specialist registration. Despite these gains the number of children still far outweighs the available expertise with South Africa just over 1 million births per year. We therefore need to advocate for more trainees, better primary health care and best-practise in the care of all South African children.
To achieve this we need to keep up-to-date with the latest medical knowledge in a diverse number of fields. This is reflected in our program which is due to a collaborative effort from a number of paediatric interest groups which includes: SAAPS, PANDA, USANA, PCCSA, SASPID, Critical Care, ALLSA, PMG, SAGES and SACCWG. It is through the tireless effort of all the members of the organizing committee and scientific committee that this program has been put together.
We are also very grateful to our international expert panel, who have taken time out of their busy schedules to share and interact with us at this meeting. This congress we have attracted 4 exciting pre-conference workshops and an exciting line up of presentations.
The success of our society depends on the members. We hope that those who are new to the society will join us in growing SAPA, as together we can work from a position of strength. Looking forward to seeing you all at the congress!
