ECMO Course

The UCT’s Chris Barnard Division of Cardiothoracic surgery and the department of Anaesthesia will be hosting an ECMO course at Red Cross Children’s Hospital the week of 21 September 2015. This will be in collaboration with Tim Jones, a congenital surgeon from Birmingham’s Children Hospital(UK) and two ECMO nurse practitioners, one from Leicester and another from Birmingham.

At this stage it looks like Dr Robert Bartlett, one of the “fathers of ECMO” may be sponsored by ELSO to attend.

The format will be lectures from the Monday to the Wednesday and practical sessions in the afternoon. The Thursday is a public holiday. On the Friday we will repeat some lectures and have a shorter open practical session.

Our idea is to open the lectures up to as many people as possible. We will also invite experienced local speakers. Unfortunately the practical sessions will be restricted to a number of 15 people and we will have to give preference to delegates from the local Cape Town hospitals. The reason for this is that we are only about to start with ECMO at our hospitals and need to put together a group of trained people.

I know many of you have extensive experience and your attendance to the lectures will be welcomed.

There is no registration cost involved and we aim to get it CME accredited.

Delegates can notify Andre Brooks and Jade Lovember, the divisional secretary, if they are interested to attend.
